Why Is My Power Point Not Working?
When a power point stops working, the cause is usually simple: a tripped safety switch, a faulty appliance, an outlet switched off at the wall, or a failed USB charger. If none of those explain it, the problem is likely a loose connection or a failed outlet, which is a job for a licensed electrician. Here is how to work through it safely in your Perth home, step by step.

Why has my power point suddenly stopped working?
The most common causes are a safety switch or circuit breaker that has tripped at the switchboard, an appliance that has failed rather than the outlet, or a power point that has simply been switched off. Less often, the outlet itself has failed, or a connection behind it or further back along the circuit has come loose.
The good news is that the simple causes can be ruled out in a few minutes, without touching anything you should not.
Is it the power point or the appliance?
Start here, because it is the most common mix-up. Make sure the switch on the power point is on, then plug in something you know works, like a lamp or a phone charger. If that works, the outlet is fine and the original appliance is the problem.
If nothing works from that power point, try the other socket on the same outlet and the power points nearby. Knowing whether it is one socket, one outlet or a group of outlets narrows the cause down quickly.
Could a safety switch have tripped?
Yes, and it is the first thing to check at the switchboard. A safety switch protects a whole circuit, so if it trips, every power point on that circuit goes dead, often across several rooms. Look for a switch sitting in the off or middle position and reset it once.
If it stays on, a momentary fault tripped it and you are likely fine. If it trips again straight away, unplug the appliances on that circuit and follow the steps in our guide, why does my safety switch keep tripping, to find the faulty appliance.
Why are several power points dead but nothing has tripped?
This is where the cause usually moves beyond a quick fix. Power points on a circuit are typically connected one after another, so a loose connection at one outlet can cut power to every outlet after it, even though nothing at the switchboard has tripped.
That loose connection is not just an inconvenience. It can generate heat inside the wall. Homes in established suburbs like Girrawheen, Balga and Mirrabooka often still have their original power points and wiring, and connections that have loosened over decades are a common find. This needs a licensed electrician with proper test equipment to trace.
What if the power point is warm, discoloured or crackling?
Stop using it. Unplug what you safely can and, if you know which circuit it is on, switch that circuit off at the switchboard. A power point that feels warm, shows brown or black marks, smells like burning plastic, or crackles when you plug something in is overheating right now.
Do not keep using a damaged outlet and do not tape over it. Call a licensed electrician promptly, because this is one of the clearest early warning signs of an electrical fire.
Can I replace a power point myself?
No. In Western Australia, replacing, repairing or relocating a power point is work on your fixed wiring, and it must be carried out by a licensed electrician. DIY power point work is illegal, can void your home insurance and puts your household at risk.
A licensed electrician will find the actual cause rather than just swapping the outlet, make sure the circuit is protected by a safety switch, and test everything before handover. If your home is short on outlets, it is also a good chance to add the extra power points you need.
When should I call an electrician?
Call a licensed electrician when a power point is dead and the switch, the appliance and the safety switch are all ruled out, when several outlets are dead with nothing tripped, or straight away if an outlet is warm, marked or crackling.
